Bali is a tropical paradise, however, as with most Asian destinations, health and safety standards are not always up to scratch. There are a few things to be aware of when visiting Bali:

Petty theft and robbery has seen a recent surge, particularly in the south beach areas and Ubud. Thieves typically drive alongside unsuspecting tourists and snatch bags and valuables before speeding off. Don’t leave valuables lying around your hotel room – store passports and money in the hotel safe, and lock doors and windows when you leave.

Avoid ordering suspect ‘local’ liquor. Chances are, cheap drinks have been spiked or laced with thinning chemicals, so if you’re paying 10,000 Rupiah for a cocktail, it’s probably not the real deal. Bali has stringent drug laws so if you get offered anything, just walk away. Watch out for the island’s sneaky monkeys who will stop at nothing to steal food and objects right out of your hand.

Although there are no required vaccinations for entering Bali, it is highly recommended to be vaccinated against typhoid, Hepatitis A and rabies (due to stray dogs and monkeys on the island). Dengue fever is a health hazard so make sure you’re protected against mosquitoes.

As one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, accommodation in Bali is as diverse as its attractions, and you’ll definitely find something to your taste and budget!

South Bali is the most popular boasting an array of temples, coconut-infused beaches and warm, crystal waters for the perfect diving experience. The chic town of Seminyak will dazzle with its high-end boutiques, luxurious spas and refined nightlife. World-famous Kuta Beach is just a stone’s throw away. The offshore islands of Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan are just a hop away, for a day of spectacular diving. South Bali has great options for backpackers and beach bungalows.

For an authentic experience of Bali, consider staying in Ubud or Gianyar in Central Bali – the cultural heart of the island. Expect to find 5-star resorts, private villas and spa sanctuaries.

For a quiet, picturesque retreat, Lovina boasts unspoilt stretches of black sand and delightful hot springs. Peruse the markets and pick up some crafts and hand-make trinkets, before exploring the balmy beaches and old city streets.

East Bali is a discovery of serene coastal villages, from where the majestic peak of Mount Batur towers over the town.

Getting around the island is fairly easy, with many options at your disposal. Walking conditions are not always ideal due to poor roads and occasional flooding. Simply tell your hotel where you want to go and they will assist you with the best available options.

The Perama bus company is a backpacker’s friend, as a cheap and reliable way of getting around the island. Metered taxis are widely available in southern Bali, but a little harder to spot further afield. If you’re planning a day trip, consider hiring a taxi driver for the day which often works out cheaper than renting a car.

Travel like a local and hop into a bemo (minivan) to shuttle around. Scooter and motorbike rentals are fairly common, and is a wonderful, scenic way to see the island. Beware of hazardous traffic, particularly over festival periods. Driving a motorbike requires a valid driver’s licence and IDP, and helmets must be worn at all times.

For the more laid-back traveller, rent a bicycle and get an intimate feel of the island’s tranquil surroundings and spiritual spaces.
